The Outcome

The Guardians of the Ocean project conducted an educational initiative in Mihiripanna, Unawatuna, engaging 65 children aged 12-16 from surrounding fishing villages. The program focused on the climate crisis, plastic pollution, and its impact on marine ecosystems, highlighting the urgent need for conservation efforts within coastal communities.

Interactive sessions introduced children to the effects of polythene and plastic waste on marine life, emphasizing sustainable practices. As part of the initiative, each participant received an upcycled bag made from sari fabric, reinforcing the importance of reusing materials to reduce environmental harm.

This project was made possible through the efforts of our dedicated team of facilitators, including Aalam Musaddique, Zaid Basheer, Nysha Perera, Thiruni Dissanayake, and Niven Ganegama, as well as the support of the Mihiripenna District Secretariat, the Grama Niladhari, and the Sarvodaya Galle District Coordinator. Their collaboration ensured the success of this initiative, furthering the mission of empowering coastal communities in marine conservation.
