The Outcome

The latest Guardians of the Ocean event took place at Moratuwella Beach, starting at 9:30 AM. The event was honored by the presence of Ms. Neetha Ariyaratne, Vice President of the Lanka Jathika Sarvodaya Shramadana Sangamaya, and Mr. Nihal Francis, Officer-in-Charge of the Moratuwa Police.

The day began with interfaith blessings from Buddhist and Christian religious leaders, symbolizing the community-driven and inclusive approach of the initiative. Mr. Indunil Hiththatiya, Sarvodaya’s Field Operations Director, addressed the gathering, emphasizing the importance of working alongside coastal populations and highlighting the ongoing Sarvodaya Emergency Relief Programs in the region.

Dr. Charika Marasinghe led an ocean-related mindfulness exercise, guiding participants to reflect on their connection to the environment and the importance of protecting marine ecosystems.

The keynote address was given by Mr. Niven Ganegama, Founding Director of Youth Force Sri Lanka and Lead Facilitator of Guardians of the Ocean. As an avid scuba diver, Niven shared personal experiences of marine disruptions such as coral bleaching and unsustainable fishing practices, shedding light on the threats facing Sri Lanka’s marine ecosystems.

Following the addresses, the event transitioned to interactive activities, engaging over 40 children aged 6 to 14 from the local fishing community in various conservation-focused activities.
